Fish body geometry reduces the upstream velocity profile in subcritical flowing waters

چکیده
Abstract Fish body geometry is highly variable across species, affecting the fluid-body interactions fish rely on for habitat choice, feeding, predator avoidance and spawning. We hypothesize that may substantially influence velocity experienced by swimming. To test this hypothesis, we built nine full-scale physical prototypes of common freshwater species. The were placed in a large laboratory flume upstream time-averaged profiles measured with increasing distance from anterior-most location each body. measurements revealed can have significant profile, reducing flow field at one length fish. Furthermore, it was found species investigated study be normalized to single fit curve based freestream under subcritical conditions. These findings are significant, because they show conventional point overlook effect field, creating systematically biased representation flowing waters. This bias illustrated maps created without presence models three different Finally, provide an example how recalculated closer “the fish’s perspective”.

The Role of Filter Feeders in Flowing Waters
Net-spinning trichopteran larvae are used as examples of filter-feeding stream insects to show that various species feed upon a range of particle sizes. Evolution of individual species has resulted in cropping various particle sizes of drifting stream seston. Mechanisms of how this is achieved are discussed. The evolutionary diversity of filter feeders has important consequences for stream ecos...

متن کاملWarmwater Fish in Small Standing Waters
This chapter describes standardized sampling techniques for routine monitoring and population assessment of warmwater sport and prey fishes in small standing water bodies. Although water temperature regulates growth, survival, and reproduction of fishes, there are no specific criteria that define a warmwater fish community. Dodds (2002) noted that warmwater fish communities tend to be dominated...

On 9 July 2002, while sampling a flowing segment of the North Fork Ninnescah River 10 km upstream from Cheney Reservoir, Reno County, Kansas, we observed and collected dead and dying specimens of 5 fish species. We attribute the fish kill to high water temperature, which reached 38.0 C on this day. RESUMEN El 9 de julio del 2002, mientras muestreábamos un segmento con corriente del rı́o North Fo...
